In classic AI literature an agent is a software entity that interacts with an environment and makes its own decisions toward a goal; in the LLM era the word has been revived to describe systems where a model loops through planning and tool use rather than producing a single one-shot reply. The 2023 wave of AutoGPT and BabyAGI popularised the term, and concepts like Agentic Workflow, Tool Use, Function Calling and ReAct have since entered the mainstream. To be considered a 'mature' agent, a system is typically expected to do planning, manage memory, use tools and recover from its own mistakes. Today 'AI Agent' has become a near-universal marketing label, but genuinely autonomous behaviour remains an active research area.
