AI Wrapper Apps are AI applications that put a thin product layer over one or more LLM APIs — typically ChatGPT, Claude Sonnet, or models routed through OpenRouter. The category exploded after the ChatGPT API opened in 2023 and now spans content generation, customer support, personal assistants, and more. Critics dismiss them as just an API call, but plenty of examples deliver real value through distribution, UX, and vertical expertise. Building these wrappers is in fact one of the main day-to-day jobs of the AI Engineer role.
