DALL-E is OpenAI's image-generation model series, introduced in January 2021, that brought text-to-image to a mainstream audience; the name nods to Salvador Dalí and WALL-E. DALL-E 2 (2022) substantially raised resolution and realism, while DALL-E 3 (2023) was integrated into ChatGPT and later evolved into a more capable image stack alongside GPT-image-1. Stable Diffusion and Midjourney were the other big consumer drivers in the same window, but DALL-E's ChatGPT integration brought "chat your way to an image" to millions. The underlying architecture shifted across generations — initially autoregressive, then largely diffusion-based.
