Deep learning covers the techniques used to train Neural Network models with many hidden layers. The field accelerated after 2006 thanks to Hinton, Bengio, and LeCun, with convolutional nets reshaping vision and the Transformer later doing the same for language. Today's Foundation Models are essentially huge deep-learning systems running along the curve described by Scaling Laws. None of this practical explosion would have been possible without GPU and TPU hardware to back it.
