Episodic memory is a term borrowed from cognitive psychology: the ability to recall specific events together with their context and time stamp ('yesterday in this conversation that bug came up'). In an AI Agent architecture, episodic memory is the layer that stores specific interaction episodes alongside their context, distinct from the more generic facts kept in Long-Term Memory. In practice it is used to retain traces of an agent's past runs to support Reflection Pattern loops, answering questions like 'what did we learn from last time's mistake?' The design space is still maturing, but it is widely seen as one of the most promising directions for long-term improvements in agent reliability.
