Image generation is the task of producing new images from a text prompt or other conditioning input. OpenAI's DALL-E (2021), then Stable Diffusion (2022), Midjourney, Imagen, and Flux brought the field into public awareness. Most modern systems are built on the Diffusion Models paradigm, though autoregressive models (Parti, OpenAI's GPT-image-1) and hybrid approaches are gaining ground. Control tools like ControlNet, Inpainting, and Outpainting moved the medium beyond "type a prompt" into professional workflows.
