Narrow AI describes systems that are designed for a single task or limited domain — chess engines, face recognition, or spam filters being classic examples. Historically nearly all production AI was narrow, and even today the majority of deployed systems fall into this bucket. It sits opposite AGI and ASI on the conceptual map. Modern LLMs blur the line because they look more general-purpose, but most production deployments are still narrow applications focused on one specific use case.
