A neural network is a computing model loosely inspired by biological neurons, made up of layered artificial nodes connected by weighted links. Frank Rosenblatt's 1958 perceptron was the first concrete instance; large-scale networks only became practical in the 2010s thanks to hardware-driven Deep Learning. From today's Transformer-based LLMs on down, neural networks remain the basic computational block of modern AI. During training their weights are tuned to fit data using backpropagation.
