An open-weight release publishes only the trained model weights, holding back training code, datasets, or full recipes. Meta's Llama 3 and Llama 4, OpenAI's 2025 GPT-OSS release, and Z.AI's GLM-4.6 are visible examples. It is more restrictive than a true Open Source LLM but still gives users the right to run, fine-tune, and redistribute. That practical middle ground is why open-weight has become the de facto common ground for the community.
