Watermarking embeds a hidden statistical signature into AI-generated content so its origin can later be verified. For text it typically biases Sampling toward predefined token subsets; for images it modulates pixel space in imperceptible ways. Notable examples include work from OpenAI, SynthID from Google DeepMind, and the academic Kirchenbauer scheme. Because the Open Source LLM ecosystem cannot be forced to adopt the same scheme, watermarking remains a partial — though useful — answer to deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation.
