XML tags in prompts is the technique of using XML-like delimiters such as , , or to mark sections. Anthropic's official prompting guide documented that Claude responds especially well to these tags and helped popularize the pattern; the same benefit largely transfers to other frontier models. Separating instructions from data also reduces some Prompt Injection surface and clarifies for the model which span deserves which kind of attention. It's a practical, low-cost way to mark Few-shot examples, retrieved documents, and output schemas.
