Inference-time reasoning is the paradigm in which a model produces step-by-step internal thought while answering, in order to reach more accurate conclusions. OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek R1 are the canonical examples, and Anthropic's Extended Thinking mode fits under the same umbrella. It can be read as classical Chain-of-Thought prompting baked directly into model behavior. The practical pay-off is that investment along the Test-time Compute axis turns into measurable capability gains.
