A vector database is a storage system designed to hold high-dimensional vectors — typically Embeddings — and to run fast similarity search over them with metrics like Cosine Similarity. Approximate nearest-neighbor algorithms such as HNSW or IVF make millisecond queries possible across millions of vectors. Common options include Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma, and pgvector, spanning managed SaaS to embedded libraries. It rose to prominence as the data layer of RAG pipelines but is also a core tool for semantic search, recommendation, and deduplication.
